Turn Your Pool Green and Environmentally Clean

Apr 1, 2024 | Pool Maintenance

A recent study found that ‘nearly two-thirds of businesses say customers demand they offer more environmentally considerate solutions’.

The study was conducted by Carvin DiGiovanni (vice president at the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals) who said today’s consumers are demanding greener solutions, with eighty-eight percent of buyers feeling a responsibility to invest in environmentally responsible products. Carvin DiGiovanni specified that the main concern for residential swimming pool owners is water usage and energy conservation.

The Bureau of Meteorology states that the average swimming pools holds between 40,000 and 50,000 litres of water, with unheated swimming pools losing approximately 8,000 through evaporation, with heated pools losing significantly more.

However, while unheated swimming pools retain more water, they are typically not used or appreciated as much as a heated swimming pool. As a pool owner, you have put a lot of time, energy and resources into making your backyard a private oasis, and having your pool sit idle and unused because it is too cold to swim would be very disappointing.

Therefore most pool owners decide to install some form of pool heating, to ensure their pool can be used year round. However, to significantly reduce water loss through evaporation, and to increase the pools temperature by up to ten degrees, many pool owners install a solar pool cover. It is said that using a pool heater without a pool cover is comparable to heating your house without a roof. Solar pool covers resemble a blanket of sturdy bubble wrap, which can be stored neatly on a spool.

For the environmentally conscientious pool owner, solar pool heating is the heater of choice. Unlike gas and heat pumps, which use harmful resources such as natural gas, liquid propane or electricity; solar pool heating relies on the natural warmth of the sun to heat the pool.

Thus reducing your impact on the environment and saving tonnes of Greenhouse gas emissions.

Therefore, to maximise your swimming pools efficiency:

  • Install a cover on your pool and ensure it is covered when the swimming pool is not in use to reduce water loss through evaporation. This could potentially save 50% – 70% on your pool’s heating costs.
  • Install an energy efficient Solar Pool Heating system.
